Your recordings stay on your iPhone

Audio is recorded into Memo’s private storage and is never uploaded to any service, including mine. Transcription runs locally using Whisper speech-recognition models, so your voice is not sent anywhere to be turned into text.

Where entries are saved

Each recording produces two Markdown files: the finished entry and the plain transcript. By default they are written to Memo’s own folder on your iPhone, visible in Files under On My iPhone, Memo. You can point Memo at any Files or iCloud Drive folder, or at a Google Drive folder, at any time. After both files save successfully, Memo deletes its working copy of the audio and its in-app copy of the transcript.

Downloading a transcription model

The first time you pick a Whisper model, Memo downloads it from Argmax’s public model repository hosted on Hugging Face. That is an ordinary file download. No audio, transcript, or journal text is included in the request.

Optional cloud processing

Memo writes your entry using Apple’s on-device intelligence by default, and nothing leaves the device in that mode. You may instead choose a cloud provider using your own API key. If you do, Memo sends only the text transcript and your instructions. It never sends your audio, your other entries, your destination folder, or any identifier for you.

Each provider handles that text under its own privacy policy, not mine, so please read the policy of any provider you choose. If you never select one, none of them ever receive anything. API keys are stored in your iPhone’s Keychain as device-only credentials that do not sync, and each key is only ever sent to its matching provider.

Optional Google Drive export

If you export to Google Drive, Memo requests permission to read file metadata, used only to list folder names so you can choose a destination, and permission limited to files it creates itself. Memo stores only the selected folder’s name and ID. Your audio is never sent to Google Drive.

What Memo does not collect

Memo does not collect names, email addresses, location, contacts, usage analytics, crash reports, device identifiers, or advertising identifiers. There is no server that receives your content, so your journals cannot be read, stored, or shared by me.

Deleting your data

Deleting a recording in Memo removes its entry and any audio still held inside the app. It deliberately does not delete Markdown files already exported to your folder, because those are yours. Deleting the app removes everything Memo stored on the device, including any entries still in On My iPhone, Memo, so move those elsewhere first if you want to keep them.

Children

Memo is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age.
